Dr. Hankins is the Chief Scientific Adviser to UNAIDS. She leads the UNAIDS’ knowledge translation team focused on biomedical HIV prevention trials, co-manages the WHO-UNAIDS HIV Vaccine Initiative, and is editor of the UNAIDS science blog HIV This Week. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and former President of the Canadian Association for HIV Research. In 1994 she received the National Rolleston Award for Harm Reduction, having chaired the National Task Force on HIV and Injection Drug Use. She was a member of the Canadian National AIDS Council for eight years and principal investigator for the Canadian Women's HIV Study for ten years. She chaired a variety of Canadian research peer review committees and was principal investigator for studies involving prisoners, people who inject drugs, transgendered people, and sex workers. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
