Dr. Hellard is Director of the Centre for Population Health at the Burnet Institute and a visiting infectious diseases specialist at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Her principal research interests are in preventing the transmission of blood borne viruses (HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C) and sexually transmitted infections and improving the health management of individuals with these infections. Over the past ten years Dr. Hellard has investigated the social, behavioural and immunovirological determinants of blood borne virus transmission in vulnerable populations. A major focus of her work is the provision of clear evidence to governments, community organisations and health care providers about what behavioural and biomedical interventions will improve the health outcomes of people at risk or already infected with HIV and other blood borne viruses. Dr. Hellard has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific studies and holds an honorary appointment with the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
