Dr. Maher is Program Head at the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales. Dr. Maher has extensive experience in research, program development and service delivery with drug users, sex workers, people living with HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable groups in North America, Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific. She is responsible for a national program in viral hepatitis surveillance in Australia, which includes the country’s internationally renowned system for monitoring HIV and hepatitis C among injection drug users. Her current research focuses on the prevention of infectious disease in vulnerable populations, including observational studies and trials of biomedical and behavioural prevention interventions.
