Dr. Bastos is Senior Researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Hamburg in Germany and the University of Laval in Canada and is an Honorary Research Scholar at Imperial College in London, UK. He was Chairman of Graduate Studies at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation from 2007 to 2010. Dr. Bastos has worked closely with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the UN Reference Group on HIV and Injecting Drug Use. He has also received numerous awards for his work, including a 2007 award for excellence in research on substance abuse and a 2005 award for major achievement in drug demand reduction, both from the Brazilian government. Dr. Bastos is strongly committed to mentoring graduate and medical school students in epidemiological methods. Major current research interests include the prevention of perinatal HIV transmission, sexual health among injection drug users in Brazil, and rates of HIV and syphilis infection in ten Brazilian cities. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific studies.
